Crime Genre in The Godfather

The Godfather is a film which is highly focused on the American crime film and gangster genre. The story is based on an Italian gangster from a poor working class background that transforms himself into a social underground king through illegal means. the story focuses on law and order and how the hierarchical social structure is maintained. In order to establish an American crime film, the characters and plot needed to link together. The main character had to show the audience his ruthlessness and greed to secure the American dream of material success.

"The conflicting prosocial and subversive elements within the gangster genre give rise to contradictions that cannot easily be given away."
