Saw I, II, & III: Genre outlook

All three of the Saw movies should be placed in the psychological horror. A "psychological horror" is a subgenre of horror fiction that basically gets into the movie goers minds. Wikepedia says, "Psychological horror relies on character fears, guilt, beliefs, and emotional instability to build tension and further the plot." This subgenre use gore, and a normal human being rather an ugly monster to do the horrifying.
In the Saw movies we see an older man who gets into the minds of various people, making them in the end kill themselves. These people don't know until they are in a specific predicament that they are playing a game within a game, in which will determine their destiny.
In the third Saw, "Dr. Lynn is told that she must keep the madman alive for as long as it takes Jeff, another of his victims, to complete a game of his own. Racing against the ticking clock of Jigsaw's own heartbeat, Lynn and Jeff struggle to make it through each of their vicious tests, unaware that Jigsaw and Amanda have a much bigger plan for both of them.
Saw is brilliant and I can concur that this fits well into the horror, subgenre, as a psychological horror.

A Critical Essay *Three Kings

This critical essay comes from the journal Jumpcut, and is by the author, Lila Kitaeff. This article talks about the different Arab stereotypes portrayed in the movie Three Kings. It also shows us how the movie relates to the history of the Gulf War. Finally on the left side of the article are photos from the movie, and under these photos we see short expanations and themes."In the 1980s and 90s the stereotype of Arab terrorists as generic “bad guys” rose to prominence... Many people in the United States have had only this kind of Arabic image readily at hand."

Historical Approach on Three Kings

The movie, Three Kings takes place at the end of the Gulf War, which was also known as Operation Desert Storm. We find this out at the beginning of the movie when three soldier find and iraqi with a note in the crack of his butt (or where the sun don't shine). Doing my research found out that the note is really a map. The map shows the location of gold bullion looted from Kuwait by Saddam Hussein's troops and buried in secret bunkers. "The Gulf War or the Persian Gulf War was a conflict between Iraq and a coalition force of approximately 30 nations led by the United States and mandated by the United Nations in order to liberate Kuwait.

The Auto-Industry and Terminator 2

In this post you will be made knowledgeable about the brief history of the auto industry. This post gives a timeline of the auto industry from the years of 1960-1998. Under the year 1980 its states "Japan emerged as the world's leading producer of automobiles with just over 11 million units produced in a world-wide total of over 38.6 million." This is interesting to me because it relates to a statement in the article, Termination or Transformation (my summarization article) . In this article it states that "U.S. auto manufacturers adopted methods, which they assumed accounted for the success of Japanese industry." This brief history relates to the Terminator 2 because it ties into the movie and how auto manufacturerers tried to replace humans with robots. These manufacturers thought that robots would be more beneficial, since they couldn't get hurt on the assembly -line. Also the robots they thought could perform more challenging tasks, without any complaints. Without being said the manufacturers believed the robots would bring more income to the auto industry.

Sci-Fi Films

Science fiction (Sci-fi) films are those in which are, of course, scientific and portray advanced technology/gadgets (robots i.e.), great imagination, etc. In these films we may see things like flying cars, cloning, futuristic events, just the impossible (or at least for now). The Terminator 2 ties into this genre, because of the visuals of robots and cloning. In T2 we see the Terminator become the clone of anyone he comes into contact with. Other great examples, of this genre includes Blade Runner, Frankenstein, and Star Wars.

A Critical Essay

The author, Bill Van Wert, of the critical essay, The Exorcist, Radical Therapy, goes into complete depth in describing this movies contents. In this essay the author gives a brief overview of plot and elaborates more on scenes in the movie, while also giving his different opinions. Bill begins the essay negative by decribing a flawed scene. "The film opens with a flaw. I am speaking of the northern Iraq sequence, beautifully photographed by Billy Williams...."

This link is a good example of a critical essay....Check it out http://www.ejumpcut.org/archive/onlinessays/JC01folder/exorcist.html
