"Rotten Tomatoes for Zhang Yimou"

In this link you will find the influences behind all of Yimou's films. Influences that inspire Yimou to create such success in Western societies. Critics say that Zhang has contributed to Chinese film and has gained certain recognition with other films around the globe. One key note after reading this report I learned that Zhang uses one distinctive feature which is color. According to Zhang's technique of "using colors to tell a story." After viewing the movie Hero (2002), I understood now when I was reading the article when it commented that Zhang had a deep insight into human nature and a way of portraying it.

Tang Yuankai says that, " Yimou's first film to have gained recognition as a cinematographer was for the film Yellow Earth (1984), and has since wonbest director awards at the Berlin, Venice, and Cannes film festivals"

I personally did not know of this cinematographer, now I am more interested in his formalist ideas.
