On August 2, 1990, Iraqi Republican Guard invaded Kuwait and took control of that country. This caused a United States response to prevent any invasion of Kuwait's neighbor, Saudi Arabia. the United States sent US forces for the withdrawal of Iraqi forces. This waas called Operation Desert Shield. Saddam Hussein did not remove his forces by given deadline. The US led Coalition launched air attacks against Iraqi targets to drive them out of Kuwait. On February 27, 1991, Kuwait City was declared free. The following morning, a cease fire took effect.
